Foal Payment Program
Helping You Afford the Perfect Partner
In Utero & Weanling Foal Sales
At Maple Ridge Ranch, our foals are bred from proven, world-class bloodlines and raised with uncompromising care. This level of quality represents a significant investment, and our foals are typically priced between $15,000 and $25,000.
We also understand that purchasing a foal is not only a financial decision but a long-term commitment to raising a partner for the future. That’s why we created our Foal Payment Program—a way to provide complete transparency in pricing while giving buyers flexible payment options.
For those who commit early, we also offer an in-utero incentive, rewarding buyers who reserve before the foal is born. This structure makes it easier for dedicated horsemen and women to secure top-quality prospects while ensuring that every foal is placed in a prepared and committed home.
We designed our foal program because we believe raising a foal should be an exciting, transparent, and supported experience. By offering foals in utero and as weanlings, families can be part of their development from the very beginning rather than only meeting a horse once it’s already under saddle. This approach also allows us to place foals directly into the homes and programs where they will be valued most, right from the start.
Our program creates peace of mind for both buyer and breeder: you know exactly what to expect, and we know our foals are heading into homes that are prepared and committed.
Payment Program
We understand that purchasing a foal is a significant investment. To make the process structured and manageable, we offer a clear payment program:
- Deposit: A non-refundable deposit of 10% of the purchase price is required to reserve a foal (in utero or after birth), and the foal will be taken off the market.
- Installments: Payments can be made in installments leading up to weaning for up to 12, 24, or 36 or more months depending on what year you are planning on reserving a foal.
- Final balance: Full payment must be received before pickup and before papers are transferred.
- Boarding: If payments extend beyond the age of weaning, a standard boarding fee will apply for the foal’s continued care.
- Flexibility: We are willing to work with buyers within reason, as long as expectations are clear and in writing.
This system ensures foals are placed with serious, committed buyers while giving families flexibility to prepare financially.
Pricing & Incentives
In-Utero Foals
Foals purchased in utero are offered at a 5% reduction from their expected weanling price. This incentive rewards early commitment, while also helping us reduce future sales and advertising expenses.
Buyers must accept that gender cannot be guaranteed. While foals are sexed at approximately 55–60 days, results are not always accurate, so anyone set on a specific gender should wait until foals are born.
Weanling Foals
Foals purchased at weaning are priced at full market value, between $15,000 and $25,000, reflecting both their pedigree and the additional handling and preparation invested in them.
Our Pricing—Why It Can Look High (and Why It’s Fair)
The Real Cost of Making One Foal
Breeding and raising a foal is expensive, risky, and labor-intensive. Each youngster represents months of investment and care, including:
- Breeding & veterinary costs: stallion fees, registrations, DNA testing, ultrasounds, and repro vet work.
- Mare care: premium hay, grain, and supplements—especially during late pregnancy and lactation—along with vaccines, farrier care, and foaling-specific needs.
- Foal care: neonatal exam, vaccines, deworming, regular farrier work, and proper nutrition from birth to weaning.
- Facilities & materials: bedding, safe foaling areas, and technology such as cameras for round-the-clock monitoring.
- Time & handling: sleepless nights, careful foal watch, and hundreds of hours invested in hands-on handling and early training.
The Value of Our Bloodlines
Our mares are carefully chosen for talent, soundness, and temperament. Investing in mares with this level of pedigree is significant, but it ensures that the foals we produce have the genetics and proven family power to succeed in the show pen and beyond.
Time, Skill, and Risk We Absorb
Not every breeding results in a healthy foal. Missed cycles, lost pregnancies, foaling complications, and vet emergencies are all risks we shoulder. On top of that, we commit the time and skill needed to raise foals that are well-mannered, confident, and ready to thrive in their new homes.
What You’re Actually Getting
- A thoughtfully bred AQHA or dual-registered APHA/AQHA foal from proven bloodlines
- A youngster handled daily and started right—vet and farrier ready, desensitized, halter broke, ties, ponies, loads, and yields to pressure
- A rope halter and 12’ lead to go home with your foal
- Transparent paperwork: ownership and registration remain with us until the foal and any related expenses are paid in full
Why We Stand By Our Prices
Our pricing reflects the real cost of producing a foal we are proud to stand behind—one that is healthy, well-bred, and prepared for a successful future.
Weaning & Pickup
- Foals are weaned gradually at 4–5 months to reduce stress.
- They remain with us for an additional two weeks to ensure they’ve fully adjusted, are eating well, and are thriving independently.
- Pickup or delivery (fuel cost) can be arranged at that time.
- Extended payments beyond weaning will include board.
Young Horse Development Program
By the time they leave Maple Ridge Ranch, every foal will have a solid foundation:
- Handled daily: halter broke, leading, grooming, feet handled, and comfortable with vet and farrier work.
- Desensitized: introduced to clippers, spray bottles, hoses, and obstacles such as bridges, poles, pedestals, and puddles.
- Prepared for life: able to stand tied, pony off another horse, load into a trailer, and yield softly to pressure in all directions.
- Foal package: each foal goes home with a rope halter and 12’ lead.
Ownership & Registration
- Ownership and papers remain with Maple Ridge Ranch until the foal and any expenses are paid in full.
Discounts & Availability
We occasionally offer discounts for show homes.
Program Policies & Details
Purchasing in utero offers one of the greatest advantages of our program: a lower purchase price and structured payment options. By committing early, buyers will save several hundreds of dollars compared to weanling prices, as we are able to reduce future advertising and promotional costs. The trade-off is that gender cannot be guaranteed.
Once mares are confirmed in foal for the season, we contact Foal Payment Program participants in the order reservations were received. Each participant has 48 hours to make a selection before the opportunity passes to the next person. Any foals not chosen through the program will later be offered for sale to the public. When a selection is made, a new contract is issued with the details of the chosen breeding and an updated payment schedule, if required.
Life and nature don’t always go as planned. Should a breeding fail to produce a live foal, deposits and payments will be transferred to another breeding—either within the same year, if available, or the following season. Every reservation guarantees a live foal.
We also allow contracts to roll over when buyers choose not to select in a given year. Reservations can be extended for up to two additional foaling seasons beyond the initial year. If no foal is chosen within those three total seasons, deposits and payments are non-refundable. Buyers who defer their selection move to the end of the line for the following year, behind participants who originally reserved that year as their first choice. Prices may also be subject to adjustment in future years due to inflation and market changes.
